Lembro-me de uma tarde em Lisboa, observando o Tejo do alto do Castelo de São Jorge. Abaixo, o voo caótico e perfeito das andorinhas sobre os telhados da Alfama me fez questionar: era assim que os antigos se sentiam? Ali, na periferia do coração do Velho Mundo, um lugar ao qual dediquei um esforço imenso para reconectar minhas raízes e concluir o desafio de minha cidadania portuguesa este ano, eu me vi fazendo a mesma pergunta que os fundadores de Roma devem ter feito. Questionava-me se era assim que os Auspex, os sacerdotes romanos, se sentiam ao observar os céus, buscando no voo dos pássaros um sinal, um presságio, uma trilha "auspiciosa" para o futuro.
I remember an afternoon in Lisbon, looking over the Tagus River from the heights of St. George's Castle. Below, the chaotic and perfect flight of the swallows over the rooftops of Alfama made me wonder: is this how the ancients felt? There, on the periphery of the heart of the Old World, a place to which I dedicated immense effort to reconnect my roots and conclude the challenge of my Portuguese citizenship this year, I found myself asking the same question the founders of Rome must have asked. I wondered if this was how the Auspex, the Roman priests, felt as they observed the heavens, searching in the flight of birds for a sign, an omen, an "auspicious" path to the future.

Foi com essa mentalidade que recebi, anos atrás, meu nome Kung Fu de meu Si Fu (師父), Mestre Sênior Julio Camacho, em minha cerimônia de Baai Si (拜師). Moy Kat Jo (梅吉祖). Na verdade, naquele momento, eu não tinha a mínima noção do significado ou da responsabilidade contida naqueles sons. Foi um "presente dos deuses", no conceito da mitologia greco-romana, um presságio cujo valor eu não compreendia. Hoje, entendo que a aposta que fiz e mantive na relação com meu mestre foi, em si, o verdadeiro ato auspicioso. A sorte não foi receber o nome, mas ter tido a sabedoria de permanecer na jornada por tempo suficiente para que a semente que ele plantou pudesse começar a germinar.
It was with this mindset that I received, years ago, my Kung Fu name from my Si Fu (師父), Senior Master Julio Camacho, in my Baai Si (拜師) ceremony. Moy Kat Jo (梅吉祖). In truth, at that moment, I had no idea of the meaning or the responsibility contained in those sounds. It was a "gift from the gods," in the Greco-Roman mythological sense, an omen whose value I did not comprehend. Today, I understand that the bet I made and kept on the relationship with my master was, in itself, the truly auspicious act. The luck was not in receiving the name, but in having the wisdom to remain on the journey long enough for the seed he planted to begin to sprout.

A tradição romana do observador de pássaros é passiva; ela busca a aprovação externa. A doutrina contida em meu nome é ativa; ela exige a construção interna. Aos poucos, a vida me forçou a entender o Kat (吉). A "condição auspiciosa" que eu buscava no mundo era, na verdade, uma harmonia a ser forjada por dentro. Kat (吉) é a união do guerreiro-sábio (士) com sua palavra (口). É a disciplina de, em meio ao caos dos negócios e das relações, usar a análise precisa e a comunicação clara não para forçar um resultado, mas para criar as condições onde o resultado favorável se torna a consequência natural. É o Chum Kiu (尋橋) da vida cotidiana, buscando a ponte para a solução com inteligência, não com força.

Slowly, life forced me to understand Kat (吉). The "auspicious condition" I sought in the world was, in fact, a harmony to be forged within. Kat (吉) is the union of the warrior-sage (士) with his word (口). It is the discipline of using precise analysis and clear communication amidst the chaos of business and relationships not to force a result, but to create the conditions where the favorable outcome becomes the natural consequence. It is the Chum Kiu (尋橋) of daily life, seeking the bridge to the solution with intelligence, not with force.

E com esse entendimento, o manto do Jo (祖), o Ancestral, o Fundador, se assenta. Não como um fardo, mas como um compromisso. A verdadeira missão de um observador de pássaros não é apenas prever seu próprio caminho, but entender o voo de forma tão íntima que possa guiar o bando. É a preparação silenciosa e contínua para um dia ter meus próprios discípulos, não para que eles sigam meus passos, mas para que aprendam a observar seus próprios céus, a ler seus próprios ventos.
Hoje, a jornada não recomeça; ela entra em uma nova órbita. O esforço não é mais decifrar o nome, mas viver de tal forma que minhas ações – meu próprio voo – se tornem um sinal auspicioso para aqueles que virão depois. E só agora, ao tentar ensinar a mim mesmo a arte de observar, eu finalmente entendo a profundidade do presente que recebi. Meu Si Fu (師父), Mestre Sênior Julio Camacho, sempre foi o mestre Auspex. O observador de pássaros. E ao me dar um nome, ao me outorgar a honra de fundar minha própria família Kung Fu, ele não me deu um destino para ler. Ele me passou a missão de, finalmente, aprender a ver.
And with this understanding, the mantle of Jo (祖), the Ancestor, the Founder, settles. Not as a burden, but as a commitment. The true mission of a bird watcher is not just to foresee his own path, but to understand flight so intimately that he can, one day, guide the flock. It is the silent, continuous preparation to one day have my own disciples, not so they follow my steps, but so they learn to observe their own skies, to read their own winds.
Today, the journey does not restart; it enters a new orbit. The effort is no longer to decipher the name, but to live in such a way that my actions – my own flight – become an auspicious sign for those who will come after. And only now, as I try to teach myself the art of observation, do I finally understand the depth of the gift I received. My Si Fu (師父), Senior Master Julio Camacho, was always the master Auspex. The bird watcher. And by giving me a name, by granting me the honor of one day founding my own Kung Fu family, he did not give me a destiny to read. He gave me the mission to, finally, learn to see.
